BUNNAHABHAIN 25 YEAR

Nose: A great, delicately refined nose. Rich fruitcake (figs and sultanas), caramel and light toffee with ginger spice, chocolate orange and perfumed saddle soap.

Palate: Soft rounded and very elegant. Nutty Jamaica cake, marzipan and custard with some caramelized demerara sugar and a chocolate malt finish.

Comments: Very enjoyable. A crowd pleaser!

Official Tasting Notes This 25 year old has an amber gold coloring with quite a Sherrie’s nose, at first, that introduces a stunning sweet caramel dessert aroma, beautifully entwined with subtle suggestions of oak and polished leather. The indulgence of sweet berries and cream ensures a wonderful mélange of tastes that progress into a roasted nut and malt feast. The finish is soft and dry with a delicate dispersal of sugar and spiced oak flavors lingering on the tongue.

House style: Gentle, malty, nutty and sometimes salty with an oiliness that blends well with a fresh sweetness.

Built in 1881 in an otherwise desolate area of Islay, the small village of Bunnahabhain (pronounced boon-a-hav-en) grew up to serve the new distillery. It is unusual for Islay malt, being lightly pleated in contrast to its fiery Southerly neighbors. A big contributor to Cutty Sark, Black Bottle and The Famous Grouse, Bunnahabhain is only available from the distillery as a 12 year old, although limited edition bottlings are also available from time to time.

Burn Stewart purchased the Distillery from The Edrington Group in April 2003, and have been relatively quiet about their plans but the hope is that there will be more releases from this lovely distillery. Certainly some of the aged vintages brought out have been well received.

Nose: Soft for Talisker with clear whiffs of black pepper, seaweed and caramel. Also hints of iodine and woodsmoke.

Palate: This is medium-bodied and smooth with a subtle smoky base; the balance is perfect with hints of sweet caramel and the typical briny salinity that characterises the distillery.

Finish: Long, pleasing and very earthy with hints of ginger and chocolate.

Overall: A tasty Talisker that displays the distillery’s unique character to great effect.
